Chapter Twenty

It was a strange sensation, hearing someone speak about your dead husband’s jealousy for his mistress. Gabe in particular. He’d never once said anything to indicate he was jealous because of attention I received.

One night on my way home from the library, I stopped to get gas. A man approached me. At first, I was nervous, unsure whether he was going to ask for spare change or if he was on something and wasn’t in his right mind. It turned out to be neither. He’d said he’d been selling flowers when he spotted me. He handed me a rose. I tried to refuse, assuming he wanted payment. I told him I had no cash. He’d shaken his head and said it was a gift. “A beautiful flower for a beautiful woman.” And then he walked away.

When I told Gabe about it, he’d laughed.

“What’s so funny?” I asked. “I thought it was a nice gesture.”

“He probably saw how tired you look and thought you needed an ego boost.”

“Most husbands might feel a bit threatened if a handsome younger man was complimenting their wives and giving them roses.”

He’d held up his hands in mock surrender. “Oh no, are you gonna leave me for the gas station rose guy?”

He’d gone back to watching the nightly stock report.

But he’d been jealous about Kyrie Dawn’s interactions with Elliot. Was there anything to them? Maybe she was just flirting to get a rise out of Gabe. Elliot couldn’t have been Quinton’s father, could he?

Xavier must have sensed I was not doing okay, because he sent Rhodie out to sit with Grace. He told Lonnie to keep an eye on them, lest another catfight broke out.

“Charlotte, are you okay?”

“Hmmm, you know, I’ve been better.”

“This complicates things.”

“What do you mean?”

“For Kyrie Dawn.”

“Because there were rumors that she was romantically linked to Elliot?”

“For starters.”

“You were here. Did you ever hear anything like that?”

He stared at me for a moment. “I tend to avoid the gossip mill.”

“You probably shouldn’t. That’s where you learn all sorts of things.”

“Do you want to talk about this?”

“What’s there to say? My dead cheating husband went bonkers over rumors about his mistress and the now-dead executive chef. He obviously didn’t kill him.”

“That had to have been painful to hear.”

I waved my hand dismissively. “Just another nail in the coffin of what I thought was a decent marriage,” I said. “So to speak.”

“Did you?”

“Did I what?”

“Did you think it was a decent marriage?”

I’d never thought about it before. “It was my only one, so I didn’t have anything else to compare it to. He was a good provider, although how good I had no idea. We rarely fought, we enjoyed going to the theater and museums together…” Pathetic. Even I could hear it. “I guess I kept my expectations low.”

“You deserved more than decent.” His light brown eyes deepened.

I shrugged. “That ship has sailed.”

“Literally.” He smiled as he picked up the receiver on his phone. “Cortes, it is Xavier Mesnier. Oui. Oui. I have a question for you.
